Known as ‘the wild place by the sea’, Delta Dunes uniquely combines beach, bush and river. Perched atop miles of rolling, rippling sand dunes, it overlooks the Tana River’s delta – the only wetland of its type in East Africa – on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. Such a remote, beautiful scene is largely all yours, too, with just seven beachfront cottages at this intimate eco-lodge. Each includes a private veranda.

Built using local materials and driftwood, those airy cottages and the main mess area are built in a castaway style, yet with every necessary comfort. Carved Swahili furniture adds much style and a tree canopy provides lovely shade

Besides beach-based R&R, you can go on game-viewing river cruises, take birding tours, kayak about wetlands and mangroves, head off on snorkelling jaunts or try watersports such as wakeboarding.
